I have developed an interest in exploring generational trauma, specifically within the context of India. I am particularly curious about how socio-cultural factors, such as the caste system and the prevailing culture in the country, impact this complex topic. I had the privilege of interviewing Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain, a prominent figure who has made significant contributions to the field of global health. Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain came to my attention through her captivating presentation during our initial sessions on the caste system. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology and passionately advocates global health. Her work in India revolves around tirelessly fighting for equality in healthcare, irrespective of caste and gender. Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain's research and activism shed light on the complex challenges posed by the caste system in relation to the overall well-being of individuals, with well-being. Her work sheds light on how generational trauma continues to be perpetuated through generations due to these underlying social issues.
For those unfamiliar with the caste system, India's social structure categorizes people into distinct groups. At the top are the Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas, while the Shudras occupy the lowest level. Caste is assigned at birth, and individuals have no control over changing their caste, and it can't affect many factors in one's life. Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain's expertise provides valuable insights into how the caste system intertwines with generational trauma and its profound effects on the mental and physical health of individuals within Indian society. Throughout the interview, she repeatedly stressed the importance of education in any society. She expressed a strong desire to visit schools and teach the principles of science, emphasizing our shared equality. According to her, the caste system has no place today, and everyone deserves equal treatment.
Although she acknowledges that society has not fully embraced this belief, she remains persistent in pursuing justice and equality, seeing the detartrating effects on the physical and mental health of those mistreated. Through learning about Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain's challenges and her unwavering dedication to fighting for equality and breaking down the caste system, I have allowed myself to be changed by gaining a deeper understanding of the resilience and strength required to confront deeply entrenched societal issues. Her unwavering determination in the face of threats and backlash has inspired me to reevaluate my own convictions and consider how I can contribute to positive change in my own sphere of influence. Additionally, Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain's emphasis on the power of education to bring about societal transformation has left a lasting impact on me. It has reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of knowledge and the importance of promoting education as a tool for breaking down barriers and promoting equality. My encounter with Dr. Shanthi Vasanthagopain's challenges has instilled in me a greater sense of empathy, a renewed commitment to social justice, and a recognition of the importance of continuous learning and evolving to confront and address the complex issues that plague our society.

Combining these resources, skills, and actions makes it possible to make a meaningful difference in challenging discriminatory systems, promoting equality, and fostering a more inclusive society.

During our interview, she made it abundantly clear that every country has its issues, and India is no exception.
